LYRICS
Lyrics and music by Sam Beam (Iron & Wine)
One more drink tonight, let your grey stallion rest
When he lays in the reins
From all of the speed and the strength he gave
One more kiss goodnight from some tall stable girl
She's like grace from the earth
When you're all tuckered out and tame
Nunca pense que jamas
I never thought that I would ever
Tener le oppunidad de reencontar el-camino-de nuevo
Have the opportunity to find my way again
Para formar un mundo mejor
To Build a better world
One more tired thing, a grey moon on the rise
When your want from the day
Makes you to curse in your sleep at night
With one more gift to bring, we may well find you
laid like your steed in his reins
Tangled too tight and too long to fight.
WHY...
...do I love this song? It may seem strange, but it is the most heartbreakingly sad song I've ever heard. Yes, that's an odd reason to like a song, because it makes me feel like I could cry when I listen to it. It's about the end of a life (at least, I think so). Perhaps a long-lived, but solitary life. An interpretation of the Spanish lyrics, at Genius Lyrics suggests that the singer is regretting that he lost his way and cannot get back to the life he wanted. Another interpretation is that the singer is returning to the beginning again, perhaps at the end of his life. Reincarntion, anyone? At the end of the song, he friends find him dead and laid out for burial. Perhaps there is some hope that he will be reborn and live his life again, this time finding a better one. Whatever the meaning, it is a sad, lonely song.
